Author Elizabeth Gilbert explains the pressure modern society puts on artists by treating individuals as geniuses, rather than adopting the view that creativity is a divine, external spirit on loan to a person. By shifting this perspective, she suggests that creators can protect their mental health from the anxieties of success or failure and focus simply on showing up to do their work.
